Calculate my full BaZi chartWhat is your Chinese zodiac sign?
Your Chinese zodiac sign is the animal of your birth year, drawn from a 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each animal carries its own personality traits and an associated element.
Because the Chinese year follows the lunar-solar calendar, it does not start on January 1st β so people born in January or February may belong to the previous year's animal. The calculator below removes any doubt.
Your zodiac sign is only one of four pillars
The birth-year animal is just the Year Pillar of your chart. Your complete BaZi reveals four animals (Year, Month, Day, Hour), your Day Master and your Five Elements balance β a far richer portrait than your sign alone.

The legend of the zodiac: the Great Race
Tradition tells that the Jade Emperor invited all the animals to a race, decreeing that the order in which they arrived would set the calendar. The clever Rat hitched a ride on the diligent Ox and leapt ahead at the finish line to claim first place, followed by the Ox, the Tiger, and the rest β which is why the cycle runs Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
More than a charming story, the order encodes the rhythm of the twelve Earthly Branches that structure the Chinese calendar β the same branches that appear in every BaZi chart. Your zodiac animal is simply the branch of your birth year, made memorable through legend.
How to find your sign by birth year
Each year maps to one of the 12 animals on a repeating cycle (for example 2020 was a Rat year, 2021 an Ox year). But the year changes on the Chinese New Year, not January 1st. To be certain β especially for January/February birthdays β use our calculator, which converts your exact birth date and true solar time into the correct sign.
The 60-year cycle of animals and elements
The twelve animals are only half of the picture. Each one combines with one of the Five Elements β Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water β to form a larger sexagenary cycle of sixty unique combinations, such as the Wood Dragon, the Fire Horse or the Metal Rat. A given animal-and-element pairing returns only once every sixty years.
This is why two people born under the same animal can feel quite different: their governing element changes their character and fortune. A full BaZi chart shows not just your year animal but the element of every pillar β the level of detail this single sign cannot reach.
Animals, elements and years
Every zodiac sign is also coloured by one of the Five Elements β Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water β on a 60-year cycle (such as the Wood Dragon or Fire Horse). The element refines your animal's traits and is central to a full BaZi reading.
Chinese zodiac compatibility
Some animals naturally support each other while others clash. True compatibility, however, compares full charts β not just birth-year signs. Generate both charts to compare Day Masters and elements.
The four affinity triangles
Classical astrology groups the twelve animals into four trines β sets of three signs that share temperament and naturally get along.
Rat, Dragon, Monkey β ambitious, intelligent and action-oriented.
Ox, Snake, Rooster β steady, diligent and methodical.
Tiger, Horse, Dog β idealistic, loyal and freedom-loving.
Rabbit, Goat, Pig - gentle, compassionate and artistic.

Yes, traditional compatibility groups certain animals as allies and others as clashes. For a serious assessment, though, practitioners compare full BaZi charts rather than birth-year signs alone.
