What is BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?
BaZi is one of the oldest and most respected systems of Chinese metaphysics. Rather than reading the sky like Western astrology, it reads time itself: the exact year, month, day and hour of your birth, each expressed as a pair of Chinese characters. Together these eight characters form a map of the energetic forces present at the moment you were born.
The name says it precisely. 八字 (BaZi) literally means "eight characters" — two for each of the four pillars. Each pillar combines one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches, and from their interplay an experienced reader can describe your temperament, strengths, relationships and the timing of opportunities and challenges across your life.
Also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, BaZi has been used for over a thousand years — by scholars to understand character, by physicians of Traditional Chinese Medicine to assess constitution, and today by anyone curious about the patterns that shape their life. A calculator like this one does the heavy astronomical work for you, turning a birth moment into a structured, readable chart in seconds.
What Your BaZi Chart Reveals
Most online BaZi calculators stop at a basic chart. AcuBazi computes the full picture — the same depth a professional practitioner works with.
The Four Pillars
Year, Month, Day and Hour pillars — the four cornerstones of your destiny chart, each built from a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch.
Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches
Your ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches, including the Chinese zodiac animal of every pillar — not just your birth year.
Five Elements balance
The distribution of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water across your chart, showing which elements are strong, weak or missing.
Day Master & strength
Your Day Master — the stem that represents you — plus an automatic strength assessment (strong, weak or balanced) that drives the whole reading.
Ten Gods & hidden stems
The Ten Gods relationships and the hidden stems concealed inside each branch — the layer that separates a real reading from a surface-level chart.
Luck Pillars (Da Yun)
Your 10-year Luck Pillars and current annual pillar, so you can see how your energy cycles shift over time.
The Four Pillars explained
Each pillar covers a different layer of life and a different stage of your story. Read together, they describe the whole person.
Year Pillar — roots & ancestry
Represents your origins, family background and the first part of life (roughly ages 1–16). It carries your Chinese zodiac animal and sets the broad backdrop of your chart.
Month Pillar — career & parents
The most influential pillar for career, drive and your relationship with parents and authority. It governs young adulthood (roughly 17–32) and the season you were born into.
Day Pillar — self & marriage
The Day Pillar is the heart of the chart. Its Heavenly Stem is your Day Master — you — while its branch reflects your spouse and close relationships. It rules mid-life (roughly 33–48).
Hour Pillar — children & legacy
Speaks to your later years (49+), your children, ambitions and what you leave behind. This is why an accurate birth time matters so much: it completes the chart.
The Five Elements and their cycles
Every stem and branch belongs to one of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water (Wu Xing). Your chart's balance of these elements is what a reading interprets, and the elements relate to each other through two key cycles.
The generating cycle (Sheng)
Each element nourishes the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water grows Wood. This productive cycle shows where your chart finds support and flow.
The controlling cycle (Ke)
Each element also restrains another: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. This balancing cycle reveals tension, discipline and where energy is kept in check.

BaZi and Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the same Five Elements map to the body's organ systems — Wood to the Liver, Fire to the Heart, Earth to the Spleen, Metal to the Lungs and Water to the Kidneys. Because a BaZi chart shows which elements are strong, weak or missing, practitioners use it to read constitutional tendencies and likely areas of imbalance.
This is why AcuBazi was built for acupuncturists and TCM practitioners first: the chart becomes a diagnostic companion, helping to anticipate seasonal vulnerabilities, personalise treatment and choose timing. You don't need to be a practitioner to enjoy your chart — but the same professional-grade depth is there if you want it.
Why AcuBazi Is More Accurate

Frequently Asked Questions About BaZi Calculator
A BaZi calculator analyzes your birth date, time, and location to create your Chinese energetics chart (Four Pillars of Destiny). It converts your birth time to solar time for accurate calculations.
Solar time conversion is crucial because traditional Chinese metaphysics is based on the sun's actual position, not artificial time zones.
Acupuncturists use BaZi analysis to understand constitutional types and elemental imbalances, helping select optimal acupuncture points and personalize treatment.

Your birth time determines the Hour Pillar, so the more accurate it is, the more complete your chart. If you don't know it, you can still generate a reliable chart for the Year, Month and Day Pillars — just enter 12:00 and treat the Hour Pillar as approximate.
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — it represents you. Its element and strength (strong, weak or balanced) are the starting point of any BaZi reading, because everything else is interpreted in relation to it.
Very accurate: we convert your civil birth time to true solar time using your exact birthplace coordinates before building the chart. This corrects the Hour Pillar — and occasionally the Day Pillar — that simpler calculators get wrong.
Western astrology maps the positions of planets at your birth. BaZi maps the energy of time itself through the Chinese calendar of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, expressed as Five Elements. It focuses on your constitution and the timing of life cycles rather than zodiac personality types.
